Do I Need to Notify My Insurance Company When my Child Turns 16?

Monday, November 16th, 2015

Insuring your Teen DriverQuick answer, no, you do not need to inform your insurance agency until your child has obtained their drivers license.

Some insurance companies will ask the names and dates of birth of each family member and will follow up with you to see if they have obtained their drivers license; however it is always a good idea to check in with your insurance agent.  In general most insurance companies do not charge for junior drivers who only hold a permit.   Once the tests have been passed and someone holds a drivers license you need to report to your insurance company and add them to the policy.

Green Light | Kaplan Insurance
November Green Light Exchange

To honor of our Veterans this upcoming Veterans Day, The Kaplan Insurance Agency is proudly supporting “Green Light A Vet” with a green light exchange.

Green Light A Vet is a movement to establish visible national support for veterans by encouraging people to change one light to green in their homes as a symbol of support and appreciation.

We’ll be spotlighting our support by changing the lights on the building to green for the month of November. To encourage support in our community we will be giving our customers a free green light bulb to use on your front porch, all we ask is that you bring in a non-perishable food item when you pick up your green light.

For information regarding “Green Light A Vet” visit

Our Veterans put everything on the line to protect our freedom. We may never be able to repay them for their sacrifice, but we can show them just how much we appreciate all that they’ve done.

In addition to going green, we will also be making a donation on behalf of our customers to the Castle Point Food Pantry. If you would like to help us out it this easy:

For every referral you send us we will donate $10 in your name to the VA hospital and match that $10. As a thank you to you for your support we’ll send you a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card.

Renters Insurance Wappingers Falls NY

Quick answers: Yes and Yes.

If you are renting a home or an apartment renters insurance makes sense and is extremely affordable.  With the discounts available if you combine your auto insurance with renters insurance the expense of renters insurance is nearly free.  Renters insurance on it’s own is highly affordable and also covers your personal property.

Let me give you a few examples of what you could potentially need renters insurance for, which you may not have have even considered.

One renter we know had a grease fire in her kitchen and the cabinets caught on fire (yes, she is fine).  The owner of the apartment could potentially subrogate to the insurance company to have her contribute a portion of the replacement costs. Continue Reading »

Reasons to Have a Personal Umbrella Insurance Policy

Monday, September 14th, 2015

umbrella insurance policy | Wappingers Falls NYWhat is an Umbrella Insurance Policy?

It’s an extra policy that you can buy if you have an auto, home or renters policy.  It provides you liability coverage over and above your policy.

Why would I need a personal umbrella policy?

Even if you don’t own a lot doesn’t mean you can’t get sued for a lot and conversely the more assets you have the more you may need or could potentially get sued for. An umbrella policy takes over when your homeowners, automobile or renters insurance is not enough coverage. With an umbrella policy you are protecting your assets from an event which is unforeseen, such as a tragic accident in which you are held responsible for damages or bodily injuries.

An example: You are in an auto accident is which you have $250,000 coverage. The person in the other car has a high paying job and is out of work for four months and sues you for $350,000 or more or if someone is severely injured or never returning to work they would probably sue for a lot more. If you had an umbrella policy it takes effect at the point your auto insurance ends. Continue Reading »

Insuring Your Teen Driver

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

Having your son or daughter reach the age where they are ready to drive is certainly a major milestone that is filled with mixed emotions for most families.   While it is wonderfully liberating for both parents and child to be free from the grind of the parental shuttle bus; concerns for safety combined with the logistics and costs of providing them access to a vehicle can but a damper on the occasion.

Here are some key points to make sure this new phase goes well for your family.

Add them to your policy as soon as they are licensed
Including a teen driver on your insurance policy will certainly raise your rates; but not adding them could be even most costly.  If a teen family member gets into a car accident, but is not on your policy there is a good chance you will not be covered.  Most insurance companies will cover your child while they have their learners permit; but it is important to call them as soon as possible once they have their license.

Designate them to a safe car and tailor your insure specifically for that vehicle
If you are going to buy a vehicle specifically for them,  find something “boring”.  They might want something sporty,  but slow and safe is the best choice.   If the car is not that expensive; you may be able to save money by lowering or eliminating “comp” and/ or “collision” , or increasing your deductible.    Keep in mind,  that many of the newer technologies such as ABS brakes,  blind spot monitoring, etc. all contribute to safety and therefore lower rates.  The cost of a newer vehicle may be offset by lower insurance costs, so you may want to check with us before buying a car.

Be a good student
Many insurance companies will offer significant discounts for students with good gradesThis can be a great motivator for kids to keep their grades up and also helps to learn accountability at an early stage of their driving careers.  Also, new drivers should take drivers education and/or defensive driving courses.  Many courses are now available online – visit for an online $5 savings coupon.

Don’t let them turn your car into a commercial vehicle
Another rite of passage for many teens is their first job.  Be sure when they are looking for a new job that they do not inadvertently turn your car into a commercial vehicle.  Any type of work that requires driving, such as a snow plowing, courier,  or pizza delivery person, could nullify your personal policy in the event of an accident.

Use technology to monitor driving behavior
There are many new technologies coming out that can help you to monitor behavior and ensure your teen driver is being safe.  Whether is blocking text messages or monitoring speed and driving behaviors, new technologies are becoming available all the time.  Check with your insurance company to see what they might offer.  These devices may save you money, while also providing you with peace of mind knowing your teen driver is driving safely.

As always if you have any questions, please give us a call at Kaplan Insurance 845-297-3266.

Ensure Your Home Is Safe and Secure This Winter

Sunday, November 23rd, 2014

As Ben Franklin famously stated, ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Nowhere is this quote more applicable than with your household maintenance. While your homeowners policy is designed to protect you; avoiding problems is by far the better option. Proper preventative maintenance can go a long way to enhancing your families safety while also saving you money and potential headaches.

Here are a few key items to check as you begin to prepare for the winter ahead.

Check your Smoke and CO2 Detectors

Fireplaces, Wood Stoves, Furnaces, Electric Heaters, and even Holiday lights are all potential winter hazards that can be simply safeguarded by ensuring you have working smoke and CO2 detectors. Vacuum the smoke detector sensors to keep free of dust, install new batteries, or even install new ones for a little as $20 a unit.

Get Your Chimney Cleaned

Over time the exhaust from your fireplace or wood stove will build up a sticky residue of creosote that can be highly combustible and can cause a chimney fire. Although a “fire” in your “fireplace” might need seem so scary; chimney fires burn so hot that they can damage to the chimney structure which quickly can spread to other, more combustible parts of your house. Getting your chimney cleaned regularly can eliminate this hazard.

Protect Pipes From Freezing.

A ruptured pipe can ruin your home and everything in it. Ruptured pipes occur during winter when the pipes freeze and the frozen water inside expands. You can protect against this by never letting your home’s temperature fall below 65 degrees. Wrap pipes running along the exterior walls in heat tape, and be sure to check on your pipes on those bitterly cold nights.

Empty The Gutters

If left unchecked, falling leaves and other debris will clog your gutters and downspouts, which can cause ice dams in the winter. Start by trimming or removing trees and hedges near the gutters. If you lack the tools to complete this project, you can rent a brush cutter, tree trimmer or ladder to do the job. Once obstructions have been removed, clear the gutters to prevent a future home disaster.

Beyond the Basics: Disasters Not Covered By Your Home Insurance

Thursday, November 20th, 2014

flood and earthquake insuranceA homeowner’s insurance will commonly include coverage for your house and other structures within your property. It could also include living expenses in case of fire or in similar instances when your home is not fit for habitation. Your policy can also include injury and liability claims for both humans and pets, replacement costs for your equipment and jewellery as well as protection from theft, falling objects and damages to common home systems.

However, in cases of natural and uncontrollable disasters like flood and earthquakes, should you expect your home insurance to be there for you? Continue Reading »
